Nanna’s Banana Nut Loaf

The combined taste of toasted nuts (I prefer pecans) and the sweetness of ripe bananas just can't be beaten. This loaf won't last long. It might be wise to make two.

Delicious hot out of oven with morning coffee. Awesome at dinner with ice cream on top.

  • 2/3 C sugar
  • 1/3 C soft shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 3 TBSP buttermilk
  • 1 C mashed ripe bananas (2-3)
  • 2 C sifted self-rising flour
  • 1 tsp soda (If using all-purpose flour, use 1/2 tsp soda and 1/2 tsp salt)
  • 1/2 C chopped nuts


  1. Heat oven to 350* F
  2. Mix together thoroughly the sugar, shortening, and eggs
  3. Stir in buttermilk and mashed banana
  4. Mix soda into flour and gradually add flour/soda to the wet mix
  5. Fold in chopped nuts
  6. Bake in bread loaf pans for 50-60 minutes
