Coffee Cake from Grannie’s Kitchen

Nothing gives you more pleasure than sinking your teeth into a warm coffee cake that brings back memories of the Grannie who made it with so much love.

  • 1/2 C shortening
  • 1 C sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 C milk
  • 2-1/4 C sifted self-rising flour (If using all-purpose flour, add 3 tsp baking powder and 1/2 tsp salt)
  • 1/2 C chopped nuts of your choice
  • Crumble Topping
  • 1/2 C brown sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 2 TBSP butter
  • 2 TBSP flour


  1. Heat oven to 375* F
  2. Grease and lightly flour a baking pan
  3. Cream shortening
  4. Add sugar and continue creaming until fluffy
  5. Add eggs and blend into creamed mixture
  6. Gradually add flour to creamed mixture, alternating with milk (dividing into 3 additions of each)
  7. Fold in nuts
  8. Turn into pan
  9. Combine all ingredients for Crumble Topping. Mix with fork or pastry blender
  10. top cake mixture with Crumble Topping and bake 35 minutes
